An endometrial biopsy helps detect the presence of bacteria (tissue culture, EMMA, ALICE) or abnormal cells (histology) and determine the implantation window (ERA). Endometrial immune profiling is a novel concept based on the analysis of the local immune reaction occurring in the endometrium at the time of the implantation.
If you have experienced unsuccessful IVF cycles despite good quality embryos being transferred, an endometrial scratch may improve the chances of the embryo implanting.
Feel free to use our service even if you are undergoing treatment at another private or NHS clinic. You will get a copy of your results via our secure patient portal.
An endometrial scratch or endometrial biopsy involves passing a catheter via the neck of the womb to obtain a sample of the cells that line the womb (the endometrium) under ultrasound guidance. The cells are sent to the laboratory for analysis as per indication.
Those having fertility treatment should have an assessment of the cells that line the uterine cavity prior to starting fertility treatment.
The endometrial scratch is likely to be helpful in those with a history of unsuccessful IVF cycles in spite of good quality embryos being transferred, as it may improve implantation potential.
However, the endometrial scratch and immune profiling remain controversial and should only be performed after a discussion with an immunologist or a fertility specialist. Click here to read the HFEA report on treatment add ons.
